Carmina Burana is the name given to a manuscript of 254 poems and dramatic texts mostly from the 11th or 12th century, although some are from the 13th century. The pieces are mostly bawdy, irreverent, and satirical. They were written principally in Medieval Latin; a few in Middle High German, and some with traces of Old French or Provençal. Some are macaronic, a mixture of Latin and German or French vernacular. The manuscripts reflect an "international" European movement, with songs originating from Occitania, France, England, Scotland, Aragon, Castile and the Holy Roman Empire.

AmphitheatreTheatre
The Song of the Earth is a large-scale work of music composed by the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler between 1908 and 1909. The work was described as a symphony when published, and it comprises six songs for two singers who take turns singing the songs. Mahler specified the two singers should be a tenor and an alto, or else a tenor and a baritone if an alto is not available. The work was composed following the most painful period in Mahler's life, and the songs address themes such as those of living, parting and salvation. On the centenary of Mahler's birth, the composer, conductor, and Mahler champion Leonard Bernstein described Das Lied von der Erde as Mahler's "Greatest symphony."

Alcina
Theatre
from Monday, 9 December 2024 to Wednesday, 18 December 2024
Theatre
The story is based on Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem Orlando furioso, which has served as the source for various opera libretti. The beautiful Alcina lures men to her island, and proceeds to transform them by supernatural powers into animals, rocks or creeks. Five characters are linked to one another via a chain of amorous situations, the most crucial of these being the affair between Alcina and the knight Ruggiero. Alcina is a fascinating character, with a wide range of emotions. Love, hate and grief are expressed in sublime arias. Ruggiero, too, is an impressive figure: a warrior and at the same time a sensitive man.

Mozart Requiem
Medium roomTheatre
Thursday, 26 December 2024 19:30
Medium roomTheatre
The Requiem Mass in D minor (K. 626) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was composed in Vienna in 1791 and left unfinished at the composer's death on December 5. A completion dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who had anonymously commissioned the piece for a Requiem Mass to commemorate the February 14 anniversary of his wife's death. The autograph manuscript (acquired by the Austrian National Library in 1831–1838) shows the finished and orchestrated Introit in Mozart's hand, as well as detailed drafts of the Kyrie and the sequence Dies Irae as far as the first eight bars of the "Lacrymosa" movement, and the Offertory. It cannot be shown to what extent Süssmayr may have depended on now lost "scraps of paper" for the remainder; he later claimed the Sanctus and Agnus Dei as his own. Walsegg probably intended to pass the Requiem off as his own composition, as he is known to have done with other works. This plan was frustrated by a public benefit performance for Mozart's widow Constanze. A modern contribution to the mythology is Peter Shaffer's 1979 play Amadeus, in which a mysterious messenger orders Mozart to write a requiem mass, giving no explanation for the order; Mozart (in the play) then comes to believe that the piece is meant to be the requiem mass for his own funeral.

Don Giovanni is an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It is based on the legends of Don Juan, a fictional libertine and seducer. It was premiered by the Prague Italian opera at the Teatro di Praga (now called the Estates Theatre) on October 29, 1787. Da Ponte's libretto was billed, like many of its time, as dramma giocoso, a term that denotes a mixing of serious and comic action. Mozart entered the work into his catalogue as an opera buffa. Although sometimes classified as comic, it blends comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements. A staple of the standard operatic repertoire, Don Giovanni is currently tenth on the Operabase list of the most-performed operas worldwide. It has also proved a fruitful subject for writers and philosophers.

Ballet for Life is a very personal piece of the 2007 deceased Balletzauberers, full of autobiographical moments, a look back at a life with all its ups and downs. Love and fear, hope and humor are the coordinates, in between playing the lush life. It sparkles, despite or perhaps because of his most tragic background, with optimism and vitality: A tribute to the life!
